While the Z Flip has solid internals and has improved on most areas where the Galaxy Fold fell short in terms of the foldable form factor, the Moto Razr relies more on nostalgia and that iconic design while settling for mid-range internals. With both phones selling at a similar price, should you get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or the Moto Razr? Let’s find out.

Build and Design

Both phones have a clamshell design which means you need to flip them open vertically in order to use the phone. While the front of both phones is glass, the rear of the Moto Razr is plastic whereas the Z Flip also has a glass back. The plastic back on the Razr is slightly more grippy due to its texture and does not accumulate fingerprints or smudges. The glass back on the Z Flip feels more premium but at the cost of fragility and added smudges.

The Moto Razr is more compact and easier to handle whereas the Z Flip is slightly chunkier which also means it gets a bigger display. The Razr houses the fingerprint scanner on the bottom chin which is more of a conventional position when compared to the side-mounted scanner on the Z Flip. Then again, it all comes down to personal preference. The Galaxy Z Flip has a hinge that can rest at multiple angles which can be helpful if you are on a video call or if you want to use multiple apps, something that’s absent on the Razr.

Display(s)

The main attraction of both the Galaxy Z Flip and the Moto Razr is the foldable display on the inside. The Z Flip gets a 6.7-inch display with what Samsung refers to as UTG or Ultra-Thin Glass. The Moto Razr has a relatively smaller 6.2-inch display made of plastic. Apart from the size, the key difference in both displays is that the Z Flip has a crease where the phone folds, whereas the Moto has managed to get rid of the crease which makes it look and feel more seamless.

The display on the outside is undoubtedly better on the Mot Razr due to the fact that it has a 2.7-inch display on the outside using which you can read and interact with notifications, and of course, take pictures with a much larger viewfinder. The Galaxy Z Flip, on the other hand, has a super-tiny 1.1-inch secondary display which shows the time and your pending notifications. You can also use it as a viewfinder to take pictures, but the experience obviously isn’t going to be the best due to the size of the display.

Performance

This is one area where there’s absolutely no debate. The Galaxy Z Flip has much superior internals in the form of the Snapdragon 855+ chipset. Despite being last year’s SoC, it’s still a flagship chip and is way ahead compared to the Snapdragon 710 SoC on the Moto Razr. It also has a bigger battery, the latest Android version, and better cameras.

Cameras

This one again is a no-brainer. The Galaxy Z Flip has a dual-camera setup on the rear. A primary 12MP shooter and an accompanying wide-angle shooter. The Moto Razr, on the other hand, has a single 16MP shooter. While you can use the rear camera for selfies on both phones, the dedicated front-facing shooter is also better on the Z flip with a 10MP resolution while the Razr gets a 5MP sensor. Another thing to note is that the selfie camera on the Galaxy Z Flip resides in a punch-hole whereas the Moto Razr has a notch at the top.

Battery

The Galaxy Z Flip has a larger battery capacity at 3300mAh while the Razr, being thinner, gets a paltry 2510mAh battery. However, the display on the Z Flip is bigger which would consume more battery. Both phones can charge at up to 15W.

Verdict

If you are purely looking at the specs, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is hands down the better phone. It has better internals, a larger display, larger battery, better cameras, and is built well. The Moto Razr relies heavily on its iconic design and if you have ever used a Razr in the past, chances are that you are lured by the new Moto Razr and we won’t blame you. It indeed takes you on a trip down the memory lane. However, for a price of $1,400, the Galaxy Z Flip is the more logical option if you are looking to get yourself a foldable smartphone. Good luck getting one though!
